Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia died on Friday, December 5, 2008. He was the fifteenth Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church since the establishment of the Patriarchal office in Russia. On 7 June 1990, he was elected to the Moscow Patriarchal Throne at the Local Council of the Russian Orthodox Church. He was a protagonist of the huge changes of Russia in last 2 decades, and one of his major successes was the reunification with the Russian  Orthodox Church abroad on May 2007.
