Among the victims of the Soviet repressions, there were many clergy members, and there was a certain logic to this: the moral boundaries set forth by religious commandments hindered the atheistic regime. It is difficult to govern people who do not always blindly carry out their orders; likewise, it is difficult to obey, if you are compelled to slander, to repudiate your parents and so forth. Thus, from the very moment that the Bolsheviks took power, not only priests, but also ordinary believers – Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant – ended up as ideological opponents who were added to the list of enemies.
