On May 1, 1919, Lenin sent Dzerzhinsky, the head of the Extraordinary Commission, the following order: "...we must put an end to priests and religions as soon as possible. Priests shall be arrested as counter-revolutionaries and saboteurs, and they shall be shot mercilessly, in all places and as many as possible. It is time to close down the Church.”
The famine in Povolzhye in 1921 gave the state the opportunity not only to confiscate the entire harvest but also to rob the Church and unleash terror against believers. It became the pretence for the government’s theft and closure of temples.
