Christmas Story

Shadow Theatre for Children [6:21]

Vertep is a short puppet-performance about Christmas. Traditionally the vertep tells the story of the birth of Jesus Christ.

This type of theater had existed in Russia long time before and now is being revived by the enthusiasm of the "Uchyoniy Medved" (Smart Bear) theater.

The performance we offer to you is of special interest because it's made in a form of shadow theater.

Joseph and Maria (translation)

White snow falling at the frosty day
Hey, snow-flakes, don't fall onto the road!
We'll walk on this road and the time will come
For Virgin Maria to give birth to a baby.

Magi (singing)
From behind distant seas
Three kings were sent
To follow the star
Bringing gifts with them.
Let the star appear - where Christ is born!

An Angel comes down from the sky.

Magi:
Ow! Ah! A miracle!

Angel:
Where are you going, Magi?

Magi:
We're going to king Herod

Several days after Christmas comes the commemoration day of the Massacre of the Innocents - 11th of January in the Orthodox churches and 28th of December in the Catholic Church.
