NWS Day of Remembrance ENPUB

On October 30, 1990, in Moscow a large crowd gathered at the opening of the monument at Lubyanka Square, made with a commemoration stone from Solovetsky Island's prison camp. Thousands of Muscovites gathered for this day, officially declared as the Day of the Political Prisoners in the USSR, at the Square, which is in front of the KGB’s headquarters.

On October 29 and 30, 2009 the human rights Society "Memorial" held an action, "The Return of names". People of all ages named nonstop the victims of political repression on this day, now called The Day of Remembrance. The meeting finished with a visit to Butovo, the Firing Squad Ground, which became a mass grave for more than 21,000 victims in the late 1930s.
