Pearl of Lake Ladoga

The Saviour's Transfiguration Cathedral on Valaam island is one of the most respected in Russia. It was revived in 1989, and last year it received the right to subordinate to the Patriarch directly. Before that there was no monastic life on Valaam for fifty years, its temples were exposed to defilement. In the XVIII century the monastery had been devastated many times during military collisions of Great Novgorod with its western neighbours. As a result the hand-written treasures of the monastery and texts about the lives of its founders - Saint Sergei and Herman of Valaam - have not survived. This rather complicates the research of the early history of the well-known monastery and the definition of the exact date of its foundation.
