In the Orthodox catechism the following definition is given for this Sacrament: Baptism (Greek, baptismos – to submerge in water) is the Sacrament in which the believer's body is submerged three times in water with an invocation of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, whereby he dies for the carnal and sinful life and is reborn from the Holy Spirit into the life of the holy and saintly. Since Baptism is the spiritual birth and a person can only be born once, this Sacrament is not repeated.
