Film's Description

Father Aleksandr Men is probably the most famous priest of the Soviet period in Western countries, thanks to his many books published abroad since 1969 under pseudonym. He was a very popular figure in Russia too, especially among the intelligentsia, mainly for his inner freedom despite the lack of outer freedom in the totalitarian state in which he was born and lived.

The film draws a sketch of the spiritual and human figure of this priest who was able to speak to the heart of people benighted by seventy years of Communist atheistic rule: hundreds if not thousands were baptized by him, even in years of hard persecution against believers.

Many original recordings of Aleksandr Men, spread throughout the entire movie, help to familiarize with his character and thinking. Short interviews with people who personally knew him give further insight into his life by the way of short anecdotes and memories.

Aleksandr Men’s effort for educating Russians in the basic of the Orthodox faith is anyhow controversial, as many criticize his broadmindedness towards ecumenism and are opposed to consider him a martyr after his murder on September 9, 1990.
