Pyotr Chaadaev
Apologia of a Madman [1:18]
Chaadeev had a major influence on the philosophical and religious Russian thought of the 19th Century. Film's Description
How does one go about making a documentary film about a philosopher in which the main thing isn’t the course of his life, but rather the path of his inner growth and understanding? It isn’t possible to show an invisible thought. The authors of the film “Pyotr Chaadaev - Apologia of a Madman” were able to discuss this great religious philosopher and introduce audiences to his views, but also demonstrate the importance and relevance of his ideas today.
The film’s main idea is the tragic discrepancy between a person’s ability to think, search for truth and find it in God, and the necessity of submitting to the established government – even if it pulls a person away from God. Inside us, there’s something that demands, compels, forces us to search for truth and gives us the opportunity to find wholeness, to sense oneself in a system of coordinates, to understand what’s good and what’s bad, to separate what’s most important from what’s secondary. Government interests demand only submission.
The authors overcame the difficulty of this task with great elegance: they introduced a hero, a contemporary Russian intellectual, who is obsessed with the same yearning for truth as Chaadaev was. This allows us to compare the anxieties of a person from our contradictory times with the contemplations of the philosopher. The inner dialog with the philosopher (the voice off-screen) – takes place on the background of a populated, contemporary city, along the walls of a monastery and so forth. His ideas, set forth more than 170 years ago, take on an additional subtext thanks to the effective shooting, and they gain a new meaning. It is unexpected and interesting, but see for yourself.
