Persecuted Church

Soviet Attack against the Churches

On May 1, 1919, Lenin sent Dzerzhinsky, the head of the VČK, the following order:

"...we must put an end to priests and religions as soon as possible. Priests shall be arrested as counterrevolutionaries and saboteurs, and they shall be shot mercilessly, in all places and as many as possible. It is time to close down the Church” .

Churches were profaned and looted, thousands of bishops, priests, monks and other believers were killed, sent to jail and labour camps or exiled…

How to built up a successful project

Persecution of Christianity is spreading all over the world.  Once again, we are moving towards a world without God, the first step towards a new totalitarianism. Human rights are disregarded in the name of laicism, even in countries where in the past they were affirmed and defended through heroic deeds. Be the memory of the past an antidote to prevent a dramatic future!

What can we offer to contribute to a necessary learning from history:

  • an unique collection of footage and newsreels on the longest and more dramatic persecution of believers in the last century;
  • a specialized network of historical experts, like Alexey Yudin (Professor of Church History at the University of Moscow, member of the Inter-confessional Dialogue in the Russian Federation), Hegumen Innokenty Pavlov (Kandidat of Theology and historian, specializing in the history of the Russian Orthodox Church) or Pavel Parfentief (historian, specializing in the history of the Catholic Church in Russia and vice-postulator of the process of beatification of the catholic martyrs of the XX Century in Russia) ;
  • a rich set of eye witnesses, selected i8n collaboration with the President of the association “Renaissance”, for a live documentation of past events in U.S.S.R. related mainly to the persecution of faith;
  • good contacts  with many religious entities in the Russian Federation, both Catholic and Orthodox;
  • a team of professionals able to solve all problems that a foreign producer could encounter in Russia!

Background of the project

Since its foundation Domus Patris collected a large variety of images, from the first historic shootings (approximately 1910) up to the end of ‘80s, until the fall of the U.S.S.R., for supporting the production of documentaries. Today Domus Patris' archive of religious footage is likely one of the most relevant private archives in Russia.

Our effort was aimed at collecting the basic documentatio...
